Paintings by Emily Charlotte Percy (neé Fairlam)
Emily Charlotte Fairlam, the wife of Sidney Richard Percy, never had any formal training as an artist that we are aware of, and we know of no examples where she exhibited her work. However, she evidently was interested in learning to paint, as a bound sketch book exists that contains several watercolour landscapes of hers that she painted. This book, which Emily put together from 1881 to 1883, is still in possession of the family. Included with the watercolours in the book there is also one small landscape painted in oils on cardboard. Though faded now and yellowed, these paintings, when restored to their original brightness and colors, show that she did develop some skill, and she in all likelyhood received at least some informal instruction from her talented husband. Sections of a few of the watercolours from Emily's sketch book, titled Sketches from Nature" are presented below.
Three mountain landscapes with lakes that Emily painted from 1881 to 1884 and mounted in her sketch book.
